Renton students quilt for a cause

RENTON -- The babies at Kent's Pediatric Interim Care Center, a facility for infants born drug-affected, are too little to understand the power of giving. But some third-graders at Renton's Maplewood Heights Elementary School know all about it. On Wednesday, students in teacher Linda DeCample's class presented a quilt they made to PICC's Pam Huffman. The quilt features blocks decorated with handprints of each of the children in the class. The handprints were placed so they form a heart shape on each block. Lynae Dunham, grandmother of Chloe Richardson, one of the students, coordinated the project. ``This was just something Lynae offered to do,'' DeCample said. The quilt is too big for use by babies, so PICC will auction it off in a fund-raiser. DeCample said PICC has a special place in her heart. ``These little babies just have a very tough start in life,'' she said. ``Not only does PICC take care of the babies, they also offer support to parents and families. Their whole goal is, this child is going to go through withdrawal in the most comfortable situation possible and the family is going to know how to care for this child after it leaves because the child is going to be medically fragile for some time.''
